Very clean herd, keep up the good work. I don't care for feeding out of bags, but it sure beats using silos.

It will be strange to see your operation without silos. At least it will be for a bit.

Kip and possibly the other people thinking about a silage pad or bunker in the USA. If financing is needed, I would suggest talking with you local fsa/ascs/usda service center, whatever your preferred term is. Depending on your local office, they may treat it as a "grain storage" loan which would mean a better interest rate. Like if a person in my area was building a grain bin, I could get approved for up to two years worth of grain storage. A silage pad or bunker will take off the top of that 2 years worth, once they do their formula. But how many people really have two years worth of grain storage available on the farm. It's just something to think about or talk about, depending on the quotes from your local concrete guys. I'm not saying this is a current quote, but $6.50 per square foot might get you close enough before you go talk with the banks for total dollars spent not including fill or grading.

We planted some alfalfa from Johnny seeds before winter in the fall when it was wet and warm enough to germinate them for an initial stand. Then we cut it once to get the crap off it and now we have 20 acres of straight alfalfa and the adjacent 20 with alfalfa and another 15 or so on the second field with just Johnson grass and Buffalo grass

We just got our youngest "Tiny" (she is little for 5 years old) her new bed, same way, out of her convertible Crib/Toddler Bed, to a Twin just like big sissy's. We have a King, but 10" wish we had at least a 12 for ourselves. Great beds!

I can see both sides here. I like Silos but I also understand limitations for all versions of feed storage to an extent. Not an expert by any stretch here. Just my observations to follow. And for the record, when we moved farms in '92, we did away with ALL forage, and just did round bales, Grain. Bought a 530 Hesston (4x4 500 pounds) which matched up to barn design . 10th Gen: appears to be Limitation on farm land, not expanding past current size of herd, hires in major harvesting and manure spreading (for the pits under barns). Harvester has a blower they bring, that can reach a 150' max height, and has the capacity to unload wagons quick. They believe the 24x132 silos will hold all the feed they need stored, and are going to a Lely Vector automated feed system. I have concerns on robot going between buildings outdoors. We'll see how it goes. Kip, has similar size, I think? But, appears to be room to expand. His stave silos are pretty old, staves decaying, and the unloaders, surface drive Van Dale Magnum types, are on the last leg. For his size, a poured silo is only way to go for endurance, and size he would need. I do not know how much he would need. But would venture it will be a few million in debt. This economy. Allot of risk. At this point, he has the equipment at harvest to match his temporary storage system. 1 less expense. He put a nice pad down. He thought it out. Both farmers did put thought into their choices. I don't think either farm made a bad choice. Kip has the room to go his route. And he is modernizing his feeding ration when he gets a TMR machine. Keep going Kip!! Silos, No Silos, I will be cheering for you to suceed, just like I want 10th Gen so suceed. It was all over for me, in October '96. Wasn't because of our feed either. On a silage pad, i would check with the younger generation that is coming up on the concrete crews. What i mean is when we poured my pad less than 2 years ago, the owner was under 30 years old and the only one that was brought up using a lazer screed. Our pad is 80 wide and 125 feet long and was done all in one pour. Then it is also sloped south 1% and sloped west 1%, just to the rain or juices will run off easier. We do not have any sidewalls or atleast not yet. Biggest reason is the blade on the dozer tractor is wider than the tires, so we would not be able to pack the sides until the product was above the walls. But an option is to either use the bucket on the loader or happen to purchase a blade attachment for the loader. The big dairies around here, I mean over 5,000 cows milking dont use walls on their bunkers. They will on their commodity sheds

Kip, i know how that goes with the oats nurse crop and alfalfa. Seems like a person almost gets a better alfalfa stand with like 1/2 to maybe 3/4 of oats, and chop the oats off around 2nd cutting, then take a 1st cutting of alfalfa at 3rd cutting time. Some of the other readers/viewers know what I'm talking about. My opinion, seems like if you take the small grain to grain anymore, you dont get the stand you like the following years.

Great idea! Silo's are dangerous especially right after being filled. A farmer in our area (East Central WI) had to be rescued last Friday after becoming dehydrated while 70 ft up in a silo....fortunately he had his phone and called for help and in the end was OK...

Im not sure how many cows you are feeding but my grandpa built a loading dock to load our mixer with a skid steer. We have a 2575 Jaylor mixer that is about 20 years old. It works great. But we also have bunker silos. Not sure if building a loading dock is something you thought about. Then maybe you could get by just fine with your skid steer. Just a thought. If want pictures for ideas just let me know.

You guys are getting a great start to getting away from silo's, once you get a pad you'll be much happier, yeah you'll have some spoilage but it's way safer, check out a Sheep's-Footed roller a little packer once you get going, nice to see you guys improving the farm and getting safer for you and the next generation! Great work, love the videos, also Kuhn reel Augie is a very good low maintenance mixer wagon highly recommend!

You might want to connect with 10th generation dairy in Pennsylvania. They had pit silos and upright. They are retiring some uprights and are stopping using the pits. They have built 3 132ft silos with 2 more planned. Going to robotic feeders. Hope this helps. If you can please acknowledge this comment. Take care.

Take some spray paint before bagging and run a dotted line down the gravel that way you can line your bagger tractor up with it and youll know its stays straight.

Thanks for another great video Kip. It was interesting and enjoyable. Your chopping of the hay ground is going good. It appears you have the bagger machine dialed in real good. Like the dial gauge you have on the bagger so you know the pressure. Good deal. Got the wagons going back and forth real good with the super trucker. Your process of filling the bags is going real good. Your feed for the cows is looking real good. Thanks for everything Kip. You all take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
